A Tribute to Our Founder: Alexander (Sandy) J. Mitchell

"Of course we can!" It's a familiar response from the founder of WindReach Farm and WindReach Recreational Village. Alexander J. Mitchell, or Sandy to those who know him, has spent his entire life proving that with vision, desire and a sense of community, nothing is insurmountable.

Born in Scotland, Sandy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was very young. The condition hampered his mobility and affected his speech, but thanks to Sandy's tenacity, it didn't prevent him from living life to its fullest. Sailing, skiing, horseback riding. You name it; Sandy has tried it and found a way to do it well. Congratulations Sandy for achieving qualifying scores at the 2006 Pacific Rim International Canadian Para Dressage Competition held in Langley, British Columbia this past September. Sandy is now eligible to be selected for the 2008 Paralympics in Bejing, China. Sandy is continuing to ride and compete at a very high level but is never too busy to assist and provide his leadership in all aspects of the Therapeutic Riding programs at WindReach Farm. Sandy next major competition will be in Virginia, USA, in May, 2007.

Always an outdoorsman, he developed a keen interest in farming during his teens. Though he was refused the opportunity to work with a number of local farmers, he eventually found a position at a farm worked by adults with Down Syndrome. skiing

Sure enough, following school, he acquired a farm in Ontario. He set to enhancing the farm's accessibility, opening it up to people with special needs so they could enjoy all aspects of farm life.
From this simple beginning grew WindReach Farm and later, WindReach Recreational Village in Bermuda. Although the two facilities operate as independent charities with local governance and distinct services, they are one in spirit and goals. Together, they serve tens of thousands of individuals with special needs and their families each year.

Today, more than ever, Sandy continues to help enhance the quality of life for countless people of all ages and abilities. As a leader in the Bermuda Lions Club, Sandy makes enormous contributions to his community. Through WindReach International, which supports WindReach Farm, WindReach Recreational Village and other causes dear to his heart, Sandy continues to illustrate how the determination of one person can make a significant difference in the lives of many.
